LAMONT uses pure gold and silver leaf for gilding. The leaves are prepared on a vellum pad, cut by gilding knives and lifted by special brushes before being applied by hand onto a lacquer layer. Gold and silver leaf is extremely thin but will last many years if not rubbed or touched excessively.
We recommend heavy dust is blown away and then only the use of a very soft dry cloth to brush away residue - and only if necessary. The gold may tarnish slightly over time. Silver tarnishes faster. In our opinion the tarnishing is a beautiful aspect of real gold and silver - it does not occur on faux metals. If you add water to our gilded bowls please note that most water contains residue and chlorine. If the water is left for long periods this can damage the gold and leave an opaque layer.
If you are placing a candle upon a gilded surface please use a small felt or cloth piece cut to the same size as the candle. Ideally the tealight or candle will be kept inside a glass container to avoid any wax landing on the gold or silver leaf.
