Depth and lustre
A material of great warmth and refinement, lacquer was a favourite surface in Japanese and Chinese imperial works and has been a prized domestic material across mainland SE Asia. LAMONT produces both natural and modern lacquers in Burma, Vietnam, China and Thailand. Natural lacquer is extracted from the bark of trees, often pigmented and applied in thin layers to bamboo or furniture. Each layer is carefully polished to build up the depth and smoothness. The lacquer sap turns black when exposed to air, or can be mixed with cinnabar or other pigments to make rich colours. Designers Jean Dunand and Eileen Grey used lacquer in modernist forms during the Art Deco era. We work to vary traditional techniques slightly and develop hand-applied finishes with depth and graphic interest.
Rare and beautiful materials are sourced from Southeast Asia, Europe, India and China. We choose materials with understated elegance and rich crafts traditions.
